KMPDU renews call for payment of pending salary arrears, payslip update
KMPDU Chairperson Abidan Mwachi urged the administration to uphold the commitments made in the return-to-work agreement signed with the Ministry of Health last year.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has renewed its appeal for the government to release all outstanding 2024–2025 salary arrears and update doctors’ payslips to match the revised pay scales.
In a statement on Thursday, September 11, union Chairperson Abidan Mwachi urged the administration to uphold the commitments made in the return-to-work agreement signed with the Ministry of Health (MoH) last year.

Mwachi’s statement came shortly after confirmation that the government had processed arrears owed to doctors since 2017, in line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement reached eight years ago.
He said the next priority was ensuring doctors’ current earnings reflect the adjusted salary structure and that no arrears remain pending.
"With the same clarity of purpose, we now focus on full payment of the 2024–2025 arrears and ensuring every payslip reflects the new basic salary rates," Mwachi said.
He also confirmed that a second batch of arrears is being processed and directed doctors to confirm receipt in their bank accounts.
"Brothers and sisters, it has been seven long years, countless nights marked by tear gas and petitions, sackcloth and ashes, threats and intimidation, protests and prayers," he remarked.
"You stayed the course. Your Union delivered. Funds are being processed from today. Please check your bank accounts and share confirmations, as is our tradition."
According to the union, the ongoing payments are proof that persistent negotiations and steady leadership can bring results.
This development follows President William Ruto’s announcement nearly a year ago that his administration would clear doctors’ salary arrears amounting to Sh3.5 billion, spread across two years.
A circular issued in July last year directed that the arrears be settled in two phases, beginning with an immediate payment.
"The settlement of the basic salary arrears by doctors employed by the county governments should be concluded within two years, with effect from July 1, 2024," the circular stated.
It also acknowledged the union’s demands in the May 8, 2024, agreement that called for updated payslips to reflect the new basic salaries.
